Amberola 1-A Oak with Lyre
Grill and Maroon Works
(matching serial number
#584 on cabinet, bedplate)
Amberola III (left above)

There was no Amberola II. The Amberola III sold
from 1912 to 1915. The mechanism used on this
model is the same as the Opera
Oak Amberola 1-A (right above)

The Edison Amberola I-A, released in 1910 at $200, plays both two
and four minute cylinder records with a "M" reproducer that has a
flip-over stylus bar to switch between 2 and 4 mode. The Amberola
1-A came in Oak and Mahogany cabinets and has cylinder drawers
with clip or wooden holders for 100 cylinders. Although conventional
wisdom is that only 500 Amberolas were made with this distinctive
lyre grill, there is no doubt that this machine with a serial number of
584 is part of the early set of lyre grilled machines. As noted in
Fabrizio and Paul's
Discovering Antique Phonographs (page 143),
an unusual feature about this machine is that while most Oak
Cabinets came with "gun metal" works, this machine has
maroon-painted works.
