Columbia’s first spring driven coin-operated designed for a counter top was the “N” coin-slot Graphophone. Introduced in the late summer of 1896, it sold for $50.00 and was in production for approximately one year. It was followed by this model, usually labeled the “AS” (an in “A, Slot”) but this early version is stamped “S.” The serial number – only about 11,000 into Type “A” production – suggests that the $50.00 “N” coin slot and the $35.00 “S” coin slot machines were offered alongside each other for several months. The early style “Patented” decal on the cabinet supports this theory as well. This example dates from 1897 and remains in pristine condition.
